Question: Is there any resource that will confirm that James, Duke of York, recruited his private army from northern England? This army was commanded by Nicolls and deployed in May of 1664. This was not the Royal Marines established by Parliament in October of 1664. Thank you, Laurel

Hi Laurel, I can’t say I’ve ever come across anything along these lines. I’m on holiday at the moment so can’t check my copies of Childs or Callow, but I know there’s nothing relevant in James’s Admiralty letter book, ADM2/1745 at the National Archives. Best, David
